The Monster 696 Test Blog – Ambitious Undertakings

Sometimes I wonder if I’ve bitten off more that I can chew.  For our Monster 696 review, we’re attempting to do a proper video review.  We’re not talking some guy who brings his helmet cam to a press launch, but something similar to what we do for the car side with OutDrive.ca.  The thing is we only really have three days with the Monster, generally it takes a week of shooting to get a video done.

So we’re on a compressed timeline.  We’re also working a lot out along the way.  We may have a lot of this down pat with the cars, but bikes are different creatures.  The camera angles that work are different, the set up for filming has to be different.  Did you know that the Hypermotard doesn’t make a good camera bike?  The suspension’s too firm, and the resulting footage looked like a bad earthquake special effect.

The riding itself is pretty exhausting too.  I had to come home, take a break, and write this for a breather.  This is mainly an issue of concentration.

“It would look really cool if you dove at the camera…”

It does indeed, but that means repeatedly swooping two or three feet across to aft-left quarter of the camera car to get the shot…  On open roads…  With photographer Miklossy hanging half out of the hatch.  I concentrate less at the track.

It’s 6:20 now; maybe a quick nap and then we’ll continue the ambitious undertakings for the evening.
Hmmm… Seems my boot is on fire.
