Brace yourselves, the Buell “X” Waterproof Gauntlet Gloves have become my cool weather glove of choice. There is something deeply psychologically comforting about slipping your hands into the X’s soft micro-fleece lining, it’s a promise of warmth. A promise which these gloves deliver on, which given my track record with Buell motorcycle gear comes as a massively pleasant surprise.

Admittedly as temperatures for considerable portions of my ride across Canada hovered around freezing, I was wishing for grip heaters, but the Xs retained enough warmth that I could still maintain dexterity even as sleet accumulated on my visor.
Despite the wind resistance and warmth, the Xs offer good grip and dexterity. That’s down to a close cut fit and a lack of bulk thanks to the “waterproof, windproof, and breathable membrane” in comparison to numerous other winter offerings. Pre-curved fingers and vibration absorbent gel pads also factor into the comfort equation.
Windproof and breathable? Definitely. No rapidly cooling clammy hands here despite the wind resistance.
100% Waterproof? Not so much. After a few hours of driving rain the Xs soak through like any others. The process of soaking through is a lot quicker if water makes its way past the cuff, but it’s water and if it can carve out the Grand Canyon eventually it will have its way with a pair of gloves – any gloves.
Polycarbonate knuckles offer protection comparable to most sport-touring gloves in the event of a down. Helping you to avoid testing that theory, reflective piping and the requisite Buell reflective graphic badging signals your presence to the traffic around you.
Now after over 18,000kms of use, Buell can add another line to the marketing bumph – Durable.
