2012 BMW G650GS Sertao Review: Missed Opportunity

BMW’s 2012 G650GS Sertao is the reincarnation of the F650GS Dakar which was discontinued in 2007, but did the company miss its chance to improve on the original?

Well done. I’m not really in the market for a new adventure bike but I always get a kick out of OWD’s video craftsmanship.

Nice video. Just rented and rode one of these in the Iceland highlands. Pretty disappointing (bike, not the highlands). Steadily kicked mud up onto my helmet windshield when riding in the wet, also quickly plugged up the rad with dirt/mud then ran hot. Such simple design flaws that really affect offroad enjoyment and even safety. Would not buy one myself – or at least prepare to spend a big chunk on farkles to fix it. Lots of better options IMO.

The foot pegs become a lot more dirt worthy if you take out the rubber pads, leaving a “rat trap” serrated surface. They just pop in and out.

Great review, so this model year does not live up to the name, not surprising but disapointing. Would be interested in a bike that came ready for the duel sport off road without needing farkle mania. Thoughts?
